Origins of "Dun Cow" as a Pub Name

There are only a handful of Dun Cow pubs in the UK and each seems to have its own origin. Generally 'dun' is an old English word meaning 'brown' so in its simplest form, Dun Cow refers to a brown cow. However, the Dun Cow in Dunchurch near Rugby is a mythical beast said to walk nearby Dunsmore Heath. A fable held that the cow belonged to a giant and its milk was inexhaustible. The cow escaped and was slain by Guy of Warwick.
