Origins of "Halfway House " as a Pub Name

Halfway House is sometimes considered to be a reference to Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, however more often the name of a traditional coaching inn partway along a main highway between two cities, towns or villages which may of course have expanded in the time that the pub has existed - usually hundreds of years. So nowadays it may not seem like it is positioned halfway.
