Origins of "Ship" as a Pub Name

Many pubs are named after specific ships and ocean-going vessels, predominantly in maritime areas such as naval and port towns. However there is little information about the origins of the generic "Ship" moniker. A quick look at a map plotting the positions of all pubs called "Ship" shows the vast majority around the coast. Those that are found in rural areas probably derive from 'shippon' which is a cattle or manure shed.
