Origins of "White Horse " as a Pub Name
Pubs with animal names such as Horse often refer to hunting however the White Horse has other possible connotations. A white horse is the sign of the House of Hanover and was adopted by many 18th Century inns to demonstrate loyalty to this new dynasty. It is also the emblem for Kent, and can refer to the various chalk horse symbols carved into hillsides predominantly in the south of England. Collectively, these common references correspond with the popularity of the name in the south.
