Origins of "Seven Stars" as a Pub Name

The constellation of Ursa Major, also known as the Plough, has seven stars. This constellation is a popular motif for pub signs, and it is thought that some pubs called "Seven Stars" were originally named after the constellation OR as a slightly obscure link between farming and "The Plough" (Ursa Major).

The number seven has long been associated with good luck and prosperity. This may have been another reason why some pubs were named "Seven Stars".
