Origins of "Chequers " as a Pub Name
There are two likely origins of Chequers - the first is a throwback to ancient Rome when a chequered board sign indicated that a bar also provided banking services. The chequered board also made its way onto several coats of arms and may be associated with the local gentry. Secondly, the Wild Service Tree Sorbus Torminalis (otherwise known as the Chequer Tree) was used to flavour beer before hops were used instead.
